Not Meeting All the Job Requirements

I’m sure you’ve found a job before that you would love to apply for, but after looking at the job requirements, you realize that you can up a bit short on what the employers are asking for. However, you shouldn’t be discouraged! Contrary to what many believe, even though you don’t check off all of the requirements, you still got a shot to get the job! What Counts As Relevant Experience

For the majority of any openings, most employers request that you have some relevant experience related to the role at hand. While most people think that this should be experience that’s paid, that’s not the case! Experience such as your class projects count as well.

Open up a Google Doc and start typing out your projects that you’ve been apart of at school. Analyze what your role was and its significance. What you want to do is relate the project itself to the job description as closely as possible. By doing so, you’re bridging the gap to show the employer that you have the right experience and that you’re qualified for the job. This can be very beneficial to help market yourself, especially if you’re going for your first internship or an entry level position that requires prior experience.

Bridging the Skill Gap

After applying for different companies, you begin to see a common skill required all across the board. If you don’t have this skill already, I would recommend learning the skill either through school (if you’re currently in school) or through online learning platforms.

Online platforms can be very useful, especially if the required skill isn’t typically offered in traditional schooling. For example, learning social media marketing isn’t usually offered at most schools and colleges, so this is where online platforms can shine. Sites such as LinkedIn and SkillShare offer many courses that may teach you exactly what you need!

Remember that your resume is a marketing tool to help you sell yourself. Make sure that you’re using all of your skills and experience to help you shine on paper. Even if you think you’re not meeting all of the job requirements, I wouldn’t let that discourage you from applying in the first place.
